1. War crimes tribunal hands down life term to opposition leader

    Dhaka: A special tribunal on Wednesday handed down a life sentence to main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Abdul Alim for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

    “He shall be kept in jail until he is dead,” pronounced chairman of the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1 Obaidul Hassan in a jam packed courtroom as 83-year old Alim was brought to the dock.
