Dan Burton Retiring From Congress
Rep. Dan Burton of Indiana announced on Tuesday that he was retiring from Congress. While Rep. Burton is infamous in American politics for various things he said and did during the Clinton administration, he’s also well known in the South Asian community for his unyielding defense of the Pakistani government and of virtually anything related to it. Even last year, when HAF met with aides in his office regarding House Resolution 387 that focuses on the plight of the Kashmiri Pandits, his office was largely unresponsive. I’d be curious to find out if the arrest of his benefactor Ghulam Nabi Fai played any unstated role in his decision to retire, since taking thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from a person revealed to be an agent of the Pakistani government probably wouldn’t have gone over well in a re-election campaign. It’s just one of those things that voters might have found questionable.
