1. Every Day Should Be Earth Day

Today is Earth Day.  Today, the world honors our planet by promoting more Earth-friendly behaviors and merchandise.  As a self-proclaimed environmentalist, I love Earth Day because everyone else adopts the mindset of sustainability that I have.  The sad part, to me, is after the Earth Day festivities end and everyone stops thinking about how their daily actions and decisions impact the environment.  I wish everyday could be Earth Day.

My approach to sustainability is similar to my approach to Hinduism.  To me, Hinduism is way of looking at life as a development process; an ongoing practice of learning how to let go of our attachments and appreciate the unique divine nature of each living being.  Thus, I see my environmentalism as a continuous way in which I choose to conduct myself such that I cause as little harm to the environment as possible.  On a daily basis, I seek to reduce my attachment to items or behaviors that aren’t Earth-friendly, and to celebrate the divinity in each element of nature.  So, today, just like any other day, I will make a series of small and meaningful decisions that indicate my sincere reverence for the planet and all the beings that inhabit it.  I hope you will too.
